【事迹介绍】:
Sangdeji, a woman from Xizang Autonomous Region's Mêdog County Haisin Township Primary School teacher.
In 2000, after graduating from Hebei Normal University, Sangdeji didn't follow other classmates' paths to big cities but chose to return home instead. To ensure that Domba ethnic minority kids could go to school near Yaluzhangbu River and Mount Everest foothills,
Sangdeji gave up Lhasa work and applied voluntarily for rural teaching positions in these remote areas plagued by frequent landslides and rockfalls.
Mêdog County Haisin Township was last connected by road each year due to constant mudslides,
and roads were impassable during heavy snowfall or when bridges collapsed,
often forced Sangdeji
to wade through icy waters
or slide down iron ropes
to transport children back home safely every year,
despite being six months pregnant.
These years have seen Sangdeji teach well while sacrificing her own daughter Cyenchen since age two living with grandparents in Lhasa until age seven before meeting again once every five years.
The "Most Beautiful Rural Teacher" award brought together Sangdeiji's husband and daughter in Beijing,
their fifth reunion since 13 years ago when they first met there.
Under Sangdejii’s efforts over 13 years,
the dropout rate dropped dramatically from 30% initially down to less than 5%.
She taught students who went on to become high school graduates (20+),
college/university graduates (6), while sending away her own child all along without seeing much progress due solely because she prioritized education above personal interests — hence earning locals affectionate nickname 'Hug Dreamer'.
